Carnival and Generals of A Ulla

Carnival undoubtedly is one of the most popular and deep-rooted celebrations of the people of A Estrada, surviving through the years. The Carnivals of A Ulla have got a long tradition that dates back to the 19th century. Every year the neighbours of the region of the Ulla, men and women from different parishes, dress up as military men and mock the authorities, their neighbours and themselves.

This celebration takes place in different hamlets of A Estrada for several days ending up on Shrove Tuesday at Praza da Constitución. There are two sides, an invader one and a defender one that count on Xenerais (Generals) and Correos (Couriers) who are in charge of starting the battle (also called “altos” (halts) and “atranques” (blockades).
